B K S Iyengar - Sculpting Human Kind Part I

What is the Iyengar Method?

The world's most widely-practiced method of yoga is that taught by Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar.

Mr. Iyengar has made yoga accessible and relevant to people everywhere, no matter what their abilities. The system of teaching is methodical and progressive, emphasizing detailed correctness and absolute safety. Mr. Iyengar is the author of the classic Light on Yoga. The Iyengar family runs the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, India. The work of Dr. Geeta S. Iyengar, Mr. Iyengar's daughter, is documented in the video to the right.

When necessary, instructors use supports called "props" to facilitate learning and allow students to progress safely to suit their body. Beginners work in a basic way on simple postures according to their capabilities. As one develops their practice they can move on to more refined ways of working as well as to more complex postures.

How can you be sure that your instructor is Iyengar-certified?

From the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United States (IYNAUS):

"Certified Iyengar Yoga instructors are held to an unusually rigorous standard of knowledge and training. As a student, the Iyengar Yoga Certification Mark is your guarantee of a yoga experience which is safe and suitable for individual physical conditions, and beneficial for both body and mind."
